Water Supply and Waste Water Management: Float Level Switches
Q & A
19/04/2021

What are float level switches?

A float switch detects the level of a liquid in a tank or container. It works by floating on top of the liquid and transmitting the liquid level information back to a control panel. Depending on what is required, the control panel can then trigger several different correction responses. These can include the filling or emptying of the tank, opening or closing of valves or to send an alarm to a user.

Where are float level switches used?

Basically anywhere that requires water level to be monitored. This ranges from small residential water tanks and pools to commercial complexes, factories, cooling towers, waste water treatment plants and water supply plants.

What are the benefits of using level switches?

By using float switches it means that the process of monitoring water levels can be automated instead of requiring constant manual checking. This prevents tanks and containers from overflowing or becoming empty. Float switches are easy to install, require little maintenance and are inexpensive to run.

One of the most important uses for float level switches is in wastewater management. This process is made up of 3 stages, all requiring monitoring of water levels:

The use of float level switches during the different stags of the water treatment process ensure that levels are easily monitored with automated correction responses where necessary. This valuable data greatly contributes to the production of high quality recycled water which can go onto be used for a range of non-drinking purposes.
