Controlled Humidity Drying for Taonga Conservation New Zealand

“The expertise, attention to detail and problem-solving approach the ECEFast team brought to this project made a real difference.”

The Situation

ECEFast New Zealand was engaged to support a humidity-controlled drying project for a Taonga conservation initiative, coordinated through Manatū Taonga – the Ministry for Culture & Heritage.

The goal was to create a safe, controlled environment where temperature and humidity could be monitored and adjusted remotely, reducing risk during the drying and preservation process.

ECEFast NZ had delivered similar monitoring systems for heritage and museum projects in the past. However, this project required something more — full automation, not just data visibility.

The Challenge

From the outset, the project presented several challenges.

The site was located remotely, making reliable remote monitoring and control essential. Signal strength was unpredictable, and the system relied on a high-end German humidifier that had been purchased several years earlier but never successfully commissioned.

There was no local technical support available for the humidifier, and its control requirements were not clearly defined in the documentation. The system also required a continuous supply of demineralised water from an RO plant, with multiple safety interlocks involved.

For the drying process to succeed, every component had to work together — safely and reliably.

The ECEFast Approach

ECEFast New Zealand worked closely with the equipment supplier and specialist contractors to design a fully integrated solution.

Using the RampXTM cloud platform, the team installed a combination of temperature & humidity sensors with a digital controller measuring humidity, allowing the system to both monitor environmental conditions and actively control humidity levels.

A custom control system was built to safely interface with the existing humidifier, while additional safety chains were implemented to ensure the system would shut down automatically if any critical parameter moved outside acceptable limits.

As Daniel from ECEFast New Zealand explained:

“This project was about making existing equipment work safely and reliably, while giving the client full confidence in the drying process.”

The Turning Point

During final commissioning, the humidifier did not start as expected.

Control signals from the RampXTM system were confirmed, and demineralised water from the RO plant was reaching the humidifier. However, without full automation, the project would not deliver its intended value.

Rather than stepping back, the team worked methodically through the system, checking each test point and safety interlock alongside the electrical contractor.

“At that point, we knew everything on our side was working — the signals were there and the water was flowing,” said Daniel.
“It was just a matter of staying calm, checking every safety point, and not giving up until we found what was stopping the system from starting.”

Once the safety chain was reconnected and verified, the humidifier started successfully, delivering controlled humid air for the first time since the equipment had been purchased.

“When the humidifier finally started and we saw humid air coming through, it was a real moment,” Daniel said. “It meant the system was finally doing what it was designed to do.”

The Outcome

With the system fully operational, all monitoring and control points were visible in the RampXTM cloud platform. The client was able to adjust humidity remotely, monitor progress in real time, and trust that the system would respond safely and consistently.

The result was the project’s first fully automated drying process, combining monitoring, control and safety in a single, reliable solution.

The client reflected on the experience:

“We were incredibly grateful for the expertise, attention to detail and problem-solving approach the ECEFast team brought to this project,”
“Their willingness to step in at short notice, work through challenges, and ensure the system could run safely and reliably made a real difference.”
