Thermal imaging prevention detecting hotspots in combustible industrial materials

Thermal imaging in action – detect and prevent fires before they ignite

Not all fires start with a spark. For industries handling woodchips, paper bales or waste, thermal imaging prevention is essential. Heat can smoulder deep inside a pile long before smoke appears. By the time flames reach the surface, the fire is already underway.

Spontaneous combustion is one of the most serious risks for industries that store or transport combustible bulk materials. Unlike fires caused by sparks or flames, these fires start at the core of a pile. They are invisible until it’s too late. For safety teams, maintenance managers and site supervisors, this creates one major problem: how do you monitor heat you can’t see?

This article explains the risk factors and how Infrared (IR) thermal imaging helps detect hotspots early—long before flames reach the surface.

Risk factors for spontaneous combustion

Within industrial operations such as waste management, paper production and forestry there is a constant risk of overheating that poses a major threat. Overheating, if left undetected, can lead to spontaneous combustion, and fires that not only put lives at risk, but can lead to loss of assets, production downtime and reputational damage.

The key factors that put organisations at risk of fire from spontaneous combustion are:

  1. Large volumes of combustible material – Waste processing facilities often handle very large quantities of paper, cardboard, plastics, textiles, and organic matter—materials that can trap heat and ignite when conditions are right. Paper processing plants may store large bales of paper, and wood processing operations can have woodchip piles the size of cars or small buildings.
  2. Compaction and storage conditions – it’s not only the amount of combustible material that causes risk, but the way it is stored. When materials are compacted, piled or baled, air circulation is reduced, allowing the heat generated inside the pile to build up rather than dissipate.
  3. Moisture and microbial activity – natural decomposition generates heat – a further factor in the risk of combustion. During composting, organic materials like food waste, wood, and paper undergo microbial decomposition, which produces heat.
  4. Chemical reactions – Batteries, solvents, oils, and other hazardous items can trigger exothermic chemical reactions, increasing the risk of localized heating and fire. Batteries, if not separated from general waste, can be punctured or crushed during processing, leading to ignition and fire. Lithium-ion batteries in particular, create their own oxygen, making a fire caused by them very hard to extinguish.
  5. Delayed detection – because fires from spontaneous combustion start from within, the signs – such as smoke, smell, or flames –  may not appear until the fire is already well-developed. This increases the likelihood of fire, through lack of early intervention.

Thermal IR imaging

IR imaging is a powerful tool for detecting early signs of combustion. Placing thermal cameras around high-risk areas—landfills, woodchip piles, recycling bays or paper bale storage—gives teams real-time visibility of rising temperatures.

Thermal imaging works by detecting infrared radiation. It creates a visual heat map (thermogram) that shows temperature differences. Staff can instantly see where heat is rising and identify potential hotspots.

This non-contact approach is ideal for hazardous, remote or hard-to-reach areas.

Benefits of IR monitoring

Continuous monitoring and alerts: Thermal cameras run 24/7. They detect heat patterns earlier than point-based temperature probes. If temperatures pass a set threshold, the system sends an alert so teams can act immediately.

Early warning:Hotspots form before fire. Detecting them early stops a small issue turning into a major incident.

Intervention = prevention:With early alerts, staff can spread, cool or remove material before temperatures reach ignition levels. This prevents costly, dangerous fires.

If one or more of these risk factors apply to your site, IR thermal imaging can significantly reduce your fire risk and protect your people, assets and reputation.
